Download and execute this archive file, then follow the instructions in the User Guide to create a set of emergency scanning diskettes. The command-line scanner is to be used when a "Rescue Disk" set is not available and cannot be made from a copy of NAV installed on the hard drive. The NAVC software must be updated periodically to be effective; download the "Virus Definition Update Installer" from the NAV for DOS/Windows 3.x product section on Symantec's "Download Updates" Web page.

NOTE: This software is intended for computers NOT MANAGED by an IT support group.  Computers managed by an IT group may use a different endpoint protection solution; consult with your IT group before proceeding.  The software will join your system to a Johns Hopkins centrally managed Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) group for reporting purposes.  Although SEP prevents and removes many malware threats, there may be threats that SEP cannot remove, which you would need to remedy yourself.

Usage Notes
1) It is strongly recommended that you create a scheduled full scan, scheduled active scan, or perform periodic manual scans using SEP.  The packages below do not contain a pre-scheduled scan.

2) For Windows Vista systems: if the unattended install packages below do not work, please contact us for further assistance.

LiveUpdate "There was an error performing the update":
In March 2011, customers began reporting the error message above.  In all cases, installing a new version of LiveUpdate from Symantec's web site fixed the problem.  This is available on:

LiveUpdate subscription nag:
Symantec has a workaround for use on Johns Hopkins owned Mac systems running OS X that are getting the LiveUpdate subscription notification.  If you are experiencing this issue, please contact us to request the fix.

IT@JH is making an effort to centralize and consolidate the Johns Hopkins endpoint protection environment, to reduce the number of separate departmental endpoint protection implementations to the extent possible.  This approach allows insight into the institution-wide endpoint security threat posture.

One approach includes the use of Microsoft's Forefront Endpoint Protection, which lends itself to situations in which IT groups are using Microsoft's System Center management infrastructure.  For more information on this product, contact the IT@JH Systems Management and Monitoring Group.

We also host a SEP production environment consisiting of two SEP "Manager" servers housed in the Johns Hopkins Mt. Washington data center, connected to a Microsoft SQL cluster.  This environment is used to provide malware protection for many unmanaged and personal desktops, as well as for Johns Hopkins IT groups who are not fully invested in the Microsoft system management infrastructure.  It also is currently the only Johns Hopkins-provided anti-malware solution for Macintosh.

If you are a Johns Hopkins IT organization, we can create a SEP "domain" for you that allows you to deploy and fully manage SEP client systems and associated endpoint protection policies (antivirus/antispyware, firewall, intrusion prevention).  This domain can be administered securely and separately from any other SEP domains hosted in the environment, restricted to only the IT staff you specify, using their JHED credentials.
