Inclement Weather Policy Information for Required Attendance Employees

Please be aware of the following key points:

·        You have been designated a Required Attendance Employee because your presence is vital to the operation of a work group and/or allows continuation of any service deemed to be critical.

·        When the Johns Hopkins University is officially closed, you must still report to work (or remain at work). This policy applies not only to inclement weather, but to any other situation resulting in a University closure.

·        The Johns Hopkins Hospital does not close due to inclement weather.

·        If you work at any of the Hospital locations, you must report to work, even if the hospital has activated its Snow Emergency Plan, and even if the Johns Hopkins University is officially closed.

·        The following plans may be invoked by the University in the event of inclement weather:

o   Required Attendance Plan: All Required Attendance Employees must report to work and/or remain at work.

o   Liberal Leave Plan: All Required Attendance Employees must report to work and/or remain at work.

o   Delayed Arrival Plan: All Required Attendance Employees must report to work at their regularly scheduled start time.

·        You may call the University Emergency Hotline (410-516-7781 in Baltimore, or 800-548-9004 outside Baltimore) to determine whether the University is closed.

·        When the University is officially closed due to inclement weather, non-exempt Required Attendance Employees may receive normal pay plus 1.5x the hourly rate OR may receive normal pay and be granted future leave at the rate of 1.5 hours leave for each hour worked. The method used is at the supervisor’s discretion. For exempt Required Attendance Employees, it is the department’s discretion to grant time off (as straight time) at a future date. Other special pay scenarios may occur in cases of weather emergencies, and compensation details will be provided during/after each case.

·        If you do not report to work when the University is officially closed, your absence must be charged to vacation (if available), or is unpaid. You are also subject to possible disciplinary action, depending on the circumstances.

·        The Johns Hopkins University Closings policy, which includes the definition of "Required Attendance" and other related information, can be found at hrnt.jhu.edu/pol-man/appendices/sectionJ.cfm.

We hope this information is helpful to you and clarifies any questions you may have regarding your attendance. If you have any further questions after reading through this information, please check with your supervisor/manager. Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
