DCS is responsible for software distribution, monitoring and systems management services for more than 1800 servers and 24,000 client computing devices throughout the Institutions. While these services are invisible to most customers, the use of these technologies by technical staff ensures a high degree of efficiency and systems availability for customers using computing resources.
Some examples of these services include:
- Monitoring and alerting whenever a server experiences a problem
- Aggregation of data from thousands of PCs to understand problem areas, such as the emergence of new malware
- Distribution of critical security updates that prevent the compromise of IT assets on a large scale
- Management of application updates to ensure that customers are using the same, approved version of key Johns Hopkins applications
