Accessing Your JHU Outlook Live Account Using IMAP or POP

Microsoft provides extensive documentation on how to configure various email programs using IMAP or POP to access your Outlook Live account:

http://help.outlook.com/en-us/140/cc875899.aspx

The web site is excellent and will answer virtually all the questions you may have, but we can provide a few additional tips to help you successfully configure your mail program to access your Outlook Live account.

Server Settings:

Before you set up an IMAP e-mail program, you need to look up your own IMAP and SMTP server settings.   To find your server settings, sign in to your e-mail account using Outlook Web App. After you sign in, click the drop-down arrow next to the Help question mark, and then click About.

The IMAP server name and other settings you may need to enter are listed on the About page under External IMAP setting listed under External SMTP setting.  Please note the port setting for the External SMTP setting.  In most cases you will need to use port 587 instead of the default port 25.

Windows Live ID:

When configuring an e-mail client to your Outlook Live mailbox you will be asked for an email address and password to log into.  You will need to use your Windows Live id and password.  Your Windows Live id is your Johns Hopkins "Login id@live.johnshopkins.edu".

For example if your Johns Hopkins login id is jsmith99, your Windows Live id is jsmith99@live.johnshopkins.edu.

Remember to use your Windows Live ID and password instead of your Johns Hopkins userid and password.
