Email Relays

The Enterprise Email Relays serve as a gateway between the internet and JHU and JHMI networks.  All email that passes through the relays is protected by IronPort X1070 appliances.  This protection includes the Ironport anti-spam engine that tags or quarantines messages that it deems SPAM and the Sophos anti-virus engine.

Another service provided by the email relays is SASL (or authenticated SMTP).  SASL allows email users that are traveling outside of the JHU and JHMI networks to use the email relays as their outgoing SMTP server to send email.  Your JHED LID and JHED password are required to authenticate, your email client must be configured to use authenticated SMTP and your ISP must allow outgoing SMTP connections in order to take advantage of SASL.

Email alias resolution is also performed by the email relays.  All @jhu.edu and @jhmi.edu email aliases are resolved to their fully qualified email address and then delivered to the recipient’s inbox.

The current maximum message size allowed by the relays is 25MB.
