Q: Can I purchase a computer through Johns Hopkins?

A: Yes, you can purchase a computer through the Johns Hopkins Mobile Computing Program. Their website is: http://www.it.johnshopkins.edu/services/mobiledevices/mcp/ .

Benefits of purchasing your computer through the Johns Hopkins Mobile Computing Program include:

  • Special pricing on Apple recommended systems not likely to be matched elsewhere for comparable configurations (below academic pricing).
  • Special pricing on select Dell recommended systems.
  • All models offer a three year warranty, with extended warranty options also available.
  • Students can receive computer application and troubleshooting support in the Krieger Hall Computing Lab on the Homewood campus. 
  • On-site authorized Apple and Dell warranty repair services for MCP systems are provided by Technical Assistance (Authorized Apple Service Provider) in Garland Hall on the Homewood campus.
  • While a student's MCP system is being repaired, they may borrow a loaner system. This service is exclusively offered only to MCP purchasers.
  • Revenue generated by sales from our campus student-run Technology Store is used to directly fund student and faculty technology projects.

Q: Can I purchase computer accessories like printers, mice, or cables on campus?

A: Yes, you can purchase computer accessories at the Johns Hopkins Technology Store. Their website is: http://www.it.johnshopkins.edu/services/store/ . There may be a chance that you can also find computer accessories at Barnes and Noble located at the intersection of 33rd and St. Paul.

Q: Can anyone fix my iPhone, iPad, or Android device?

A: Yes, we support these devices on the network and we can provide assistance for any problem you have with them. Please refer to our Getting More Help / Contact Us page for more information.

Q: What should I do if my computer is infected with a virus or malware?

A: If your computer is infected, you can contact us and we will try to remove the virus/malware and make sure that your antivirus is up to date to prevent future infections. Please refer to our Getting More Help / Contact Us page for more information.

Q: Can anyone fix my Mac or PC problems?

A: If you are having any problems with your computer, you can contact us and we'll do our best to resolve your issue. Please refer to our Getting More Help / Contact Us page for more information.

Q: What should I do if there is no jack in my room?

A: If you cannot find an ethernet jack in your room, it may be behind a piece of furniture. If you still having trouble finding it, please refer to our Getting More Help / Contact Us page for more information.

Q: How do I register for internet access?

Q: Why does the JHARS web page keep coming up?

A: All devices must be registered through JHARS to connect to the internet. Please refer to our Registration page detailed instructions.

Q: My gaming console connect to the internet. What should I do?

A: All devices, including gaming consoles must be registered through JHARS to connect to the internet. For more detailed information, please refer to our Game Console Setup Guide.

Q: What should I do if I can't connect to a website?

A: If you can't connect to a website, you can contact us and we'll do our best to resolve your issue. Please refer to our Getting More Help / Contact Us page for more information.

Q: I'm trying to use the internet, but my service is slow. What should I do?

A: We do our best to provide solid wireless coverage throughout the dorms. If your connection is slow, we can take a look and try to improve the situation. Please refer to our Getting More Help / Contact Us page for more information.

Q: How far the does the wireless network coverage extend?

A: Wireless network coverage extends throughout all the dorms as well as throughout the campus.

Q: What should I do if my wireless connection doesn't work?

A: Make sure that your wireless network connection is set up properly according to our Wireless Setup Guide. If you are still having problems, you can contact us and we'll do our best to resolve your issue. Please refer to our Getting More Help / Contact Us page for more information.

Q: Why am I having problems with JHGuestnet?

A: The "JHGuestNet" wireless network is meant to be used as a simple internet connection for visitors and devices that cannot connect to the "hopkins" wireless network. If you have a JHED ID, you should connect to the "hopkins" wireless network instead. You can find instructions on our Wireless Setup page.

Q: What should I do if the wireless coverage is not good in my area?

A: We do our best to provide solid wireless coverage throughout the dorms. If you have a weak signal in your area, we can take a look at the situation and try to improve the wireless coverage. Please refer to our Getting More Help / Contact Us page for more information.

Q: Why are torrents not working?

A: Torrenting is associated with DMCA violations and we do not condone the illegal downloading of music, movies, software, or other media on our network.

Q: What should I do if my jack is physically broken?

A: If your jack is broken, you can contact us and we'll schedule a time with you to fix it. Please refer to our Getting More Help / Contact Us page for more information.

Q: I need a network cable for my computer. Where should I go?

A: Network cables are available at the AMR II Housing Office and the Wolman Housing Office. Just visit the office and ask for a cable and they will be happy to provide one for you.

Q: I would like to purchase software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Matlab, or Mathematica. Can I purchase it through Johns Hopkins?

A: Yes, you can. For an up-to-date list of the software available through Johns Hopkins, please look at the SPARS (Software Procurement and Renewal System) website: https://spars.jhu.edu .
