Manually Configure wpa_supplicant

Note:  These directions are ONLY if you are NOT using the NetworkManager GUI interface to manage your wireless connections. The edits below cannot co-exist while using NetworkManager.  Each template below should be appended to the referenced file, NOT replaced.  Your files may have additional configurations for other network adapters and wireless networks.

1.  Create or edit the file /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf to include configuration for "hopkins" wireless.  You can add additional SSID's for other wireless networks, including home use.

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant

# "hopkins" wireless for JHU
network={
        ssid="hopkins"
        key_mgmt=WPA-EAP
        eap=PEAP
        phase2="auth=MSCHAPV2"
        identity="JHED_ID_Replace_Me"
        password="JHED_Password_Replace_Me"
}

2.  Edit the file /etc/network/interfaces and add the following lines.  You may need to change the interface description depending on which driver you use.

  • iface eth1 inet dhcp
  • pre-up ifconfig eth1 down
  • pre-up wpa_supplicant -Bw -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -ieth1 -Dwext
  • post-down pkill wpa_supplicant
3.  Reboot your system to re-initialize your interfaces.
